The capital of the California’s and the first European settlements in the peninsula was Loreto. Father Juan Maria Salvaterria founded this site in October of 1697 as the first mission in California. Mass was held under a Virgin of Loreto that had been brought here from a small town in Italy with the same name. It was the capital until a great hurricane in 1829 wiped out the city and the capital was relocated to La Paz one year later.
In the 70’s and 80’s developers thought that Loreto had the potential to grow into a Cancun like area. With theses high hopes came an international airport and marinas south of town in Puerto Loreto. At the time the economics just didn’t work out and very few people headed this way. Fortunately in the last few years Loreto saw its first new hotel and resort and a variety of flights. Residential development in this area has renewed hopes for this town with high rise condos, custom built homes and residential... less
