Statistically, as a foriegner, you are more likely to be struck by lightning than a violent drug incident. However, to listen to the U.S. media Mexico is about to colapse into anarchy. What is your experience with living, working, or traveling in Mexico.

No, i don't feel safe. That's because I am in Reynosa in the state of Tamaulipas, where it is UNREPORTED be worse than Juarez. We can not drive on the highways because of blockades and kidnappings. I have been stopped by blockades twice. I have not had my car stolen, but I know a teacher who did have his stolen at gunpoint. He was kidnapped for a while but made a run for it and did survive. I know another teacher who was robbed at gunpoint in his own home. We dove for cover in the middle of the night a couple months ago when there was a gun battle behind our house and two grenades exploded. I've heard several other gunbattles but none as close as the one behind our house. My sons were visiting last spring and got to hear a gun battle that was about 3 blocks from the house. My youngest son looked at me with his eyes wide open and said, "Mom, you weren't kidding about the shootings!" We were forced to move when someone came to our home claiming that we better move on the orders of a comandante. We never understood the motive but we hightailed it out of there for our safety. Recently two car bombs exploded in a crowded supermarket parking lot. There were several fatalities. Not to mention the recent major shooting that lasted for hours in Matamoros. It was reported that something like only 10 people died. The reporters here are scared to report the truth because last spring 8 journalists were kidnapped and one was killed. They report what they are told to report. The battle in Matamoros, according to eyewitnesses, was somewhere near 200 dead. Many were innocent victims in the wrong place at the wrong time. Just recently an entire town of Mier (near Reynosa) was evacuated because the bad guys decided they wanted to control the entire area. The military did a good job of pushing the bad guys out and people have returned to their homes.
Maybe it's OK to go to Cancun or Cabo San Lucas in the tourist areas, but I would highly recommend skipping anyplace in Tamaulipas.
We have owned a home in Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca for the past 4 years. We feel very safe here and have never had any problems other than a stolen scooter.
We have only driven down once, which was last year, and ironically we went through Reynosa as reports were that it was one of the safer crossings at that time. We now leave our vehicle here and fly back and forth.
I find it interesting that when the media reports on the killings in Mexico, they paint the whole country with the same broad brush. There is a world away from Puerto Escondido to Juarez. It's like comparing Detroit to Helena, Montana.

First off, I really hope those other members who posted weren't deleted for their honest comments. Live in mexico is what it is.
Second, I feel pretty safe in mexico. Guadalajara has never had the violence that many other northern states have had and to be honest, I used to think Why the hell don't they just MOVE!?! Guadalajara doesn't have that same kind of energy. It's always been really tranquil.
Recently, Guadalajara has been thrown into the hot spot. Just this last month, we had 7 incidents happen in the same night. Friday night a club was hit with grenades, 6 dead. 37 wounded. AND RIGHT NOW.... I walk to the store with my kids and the cops are out. A shooting NEAR MY HOUSE. Now i don't live in a bad area. I STAY out of the bad ones....WTH??? Doesn't matter where you go... it's there. While the city may be statistically safer than many US cities.... doesn't mean you can let your guard down.
I live in reynosa and like another member has stated above it is not safe and much more dangerous than the media reports.........I had a business here and had to close it because of extortion by the zetas and by public officials...........I have even had extortion threats by immigration officials......They recently arrested 6 local officials because of that,,,,,,,,With all that said I love mexico and the culture and am looking to eventually relocate to the interior where it is quieter,,,,,,,,,
