Everyone who’s been to the area knows that there is a very close tie between Playa del Carmen and Cozumel; Playa del Carmen is a mainland base for those arriving to the island by flight or by cruise and Cozumel is an island escape only a 45 minute boat ride away from Playa. Yet fewer people know that the Mexico real estate history of the two beautiful beachfront communities is also closely tied together.
The island of Cozumel is one of only 2 communities in the entire region that has been constantly inhabited since the ancient Mayan times, somehow surviving the conquest, the spread of European diseases and pirates from the Caribbean, all of which led to the abandoning of the rest of Mexico’s Caribbean coast.
When a small group of families looking for a quiet, peaceful life set up the fishing village of the Playa del Carmen during the 1930s, they chose the ancient site of Xaman-Ha, right across the strait from Cozumel because of the ideal fishing location and the shelter provided by the island. The stage was set for this village to become the main access point to the island.
During the late 60s, Cancun was set up as Mexico’s first 100% planned resort community an hour north of Playa del Carmen. Immediately, visitors began to set out exploring the area, visiting Cozumel to go diving and see the Mayan pyramids on the island. Cozumel real estate began to grow as some of these visitors took interest in making a new home for themselves in a place where relaxation is the only way of life, the weather is always warm, and the beaches are always picture perfect.
At the same time, the people heading to Cozumel had to head to Playa del Carmen to take the ferry over. A few restaurants began to open, and a handful of European backpackers began to make Playa del Carmen their final destination instead just a stopover on the way to Cozumel. By the 90’s, Playa del Carmen real estate was also growing in popularity and people were beginning to think it might be a good place to invest as well.
Those who thought this were dead on. Today it’s one of the country’s most attractive markets, with beautiful options downtown, on the beach, on golf courses and in gated communities. Together with Cozumel, it offers a very pleasant access to life in Paradise.
